A mother and two children were injured in a fiery crash on Saturday, January 28 in southwest Miami-Dade after the driver of a stolen police cruiser lost control of their vehicle before crashing into the family’s SUV. The driver of the stolen vehicle was reportedly killed on impact.
According to Miami-Dade police, one of their officers was investigating an unrelated incident near Southwest 16th Street and 107th Avenue early in the afternoon. While the officer’s attention was focused elsewhere, the thief stole her marked police car and drove away. Within minutes, she heard over her radio that someone had crashed a marked police car a few blocks away.
According to officials, the driver of the stolen vehicle lost control and sideswiped one car before crashing into an SUV. Neither the driver of the sideswiped car nor the driver of the SUV were seriously injured, but three passengers in the SUV, a 29-year-old mother and her 8-year-old and 2-year-old children were transported to a local hospital to receive treatment for their injures. All three were in stable, but serious condition.
Miami-Dade police reported and the Atlanta Braves baseball team confirmed that the driver of the SUV was 31-year-old Sean Rodriguez. Rodriguez, a former Tampa Bay Ray who lives in the Miami-Dade area recently signed a contract with the Braves, and does not expect his minor injuries to affect the start of his baseball season.
