An accident last Friday left a 45-year-old industrial worker dead at the Port of Tampa. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office reports that the victim, Joseph E. Lammlein, was operating a front-end loader in order to move sulfur. The accident happened just after 10 a.m. when the sulfur shifted and caused an “avalanche.”
As a result, the front-end loader became encased, in sulfur with even entering the loader’s cabin. In a four-hour recovery effort, coworkers and three responding deputies attempted to dig Lammlein out from the sulfur. They were unsuccessful in their efforts. The three responding deputies were seen at St. Joseph’s Hospital for exposure.
The accident is under OSHA investigation.
