Remembering the Arrow Air Flight Crash of 1985

Airplane in the sky and above the cloudsOn December 12, 1985, the Arrow Air Flight 1825 took for from Gander toward Fort Campbell. It wasn’t long after takeoff – about half a mile – before the aircraft stalled midair. As a result of what was determined to be an unexpectedly high drag and reduced lift condition, the aircraft crashed. It proceeded to burn and all 248 passengers and the 8 crew members died. Of those who died, 236 were members of the U.S. Army’s 101st Airborne Division. They were being chartered from a six-month deployment.

According to the investigation, the cause of the crash was most likely due to ice contamination on the wings’ leading edges and upper surfaces. It may have also been caused by an underestimated onboard weight or because of an onboard explosion.
