According to a recent Tampa Tribune article, geologists are hard at work creating a map that will show where sinkholes are likely to form. Florida Geological Survey and Florida Department of Emergency Management are collaborating on the study. This study will not immediately give locations for where the sinkholes will form, but will determine which counties are most susceptible to sinkholes. It will be very interesting to see what type of information comes from this report, and how precise it is.
Sinkholes are historically very hard to predict. Heavy rains, droughts, and other weather related phenomena tend to be harbingers of sinkhole activity, but if that were all it took to cause a sinkhole, the entire state would fall into a sinkhole every summer. That isn't the case.
