Common Vehicle- Bike Collisions

At Robert Sparks Attorneys we represent motorists and bicyclists who have been injured in traffic accidents that occur in a number of different ways. This blog will address four of the most common types and also ways for both drivers and bicyclists to stay as safe as possible in these common situations. A number of accidents occur when a vehicle is making a right hand turn. Drivers should be check the curb lane and check over their right shoulders to check for bicyclists so they do not accidentally cut off any bicyclists who may be going straight. Bicyclists should also be watching for vehicles that may be turning right that may not see them when approaching intersections. Many accidents also occur when drivers are turning left. Drivers should be looking ahead for oncoming vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians to ensure it is safe to turn. Bicyclists should also be aware of vehicles that are about to turn left and not assume that the other vehicle will stop or see them. When passing a bicyclist, drivers should change lanes if possible and should always leave at least three feet between their vehicle and a bike. Cyclists should watch out for vehicles that may not leave them much room and should be prepared to slow down or stop if necessary. Finally, one of the more common accidents between bikes and cars occurs when people in cars are opening their car doors. Before opening a car door, drivers should check their mirrors and over their shoulders for cyclists and pedestrians. When cyclists are passing parked vehicles, they should be aware of vehicle doors that may open suddenly.

Everyone using the roads needs to understand the traffic laws and understand that bikes and motorcycles have the same rights and responsibilities as motorists. They must yield to pedestrians, stop for stop signs, sign turns, and travel with the flow of traffic like a car. When a cyclist if off their bike and walking it, they have the same rights and responsibilities as a pedestrian at that point. We all have a duty and a responsibility to share the road and look out for each other to keep our communities safe.
