POST-TRIP INSPECTIONS FOR TRUCK DRIVERS

Investigating a truck accident can be a challenging task for personal injury attorneys. One aspect of the investigation should determine whether the driver properly conducted a post-trip inspection of the semi and trailer.

The Federal Carrier Regulations require a post-trip inspection to make sure that there are no apparent defects or signs of disrepair on the vehicle. The goal of the post-trip inspection is to ensure the next driver of the truck is satisfied that the vehicle is in safer operating condition. Thus, the Federal Carrier Regulations require that the post-trip inspection be memorialized in a written report.

The inspection and report should cover the following areas:

• Trailer brake connections

• Parking break

• Steering mechanisms

• Lighting devices and reflectors

• Tires

• Horn

• Windshield wipers

• Rear vision mirrors

• Coupling devices

If the driver finds any deficiencies, he or she is required to note same in the report. The incoming or next driver then has the obligation to sign the report and acknowledge that there is a certification and that the required repairs have been made. The regulations imposed by State and Federal guidelines are designed to make the road ways safer, especially for semi-trailers given the enormous amount of damage truck accidents can cause.
