Tropical Storm Debby is turning out to cause damage in more ways than usual. Every Florida resident is aware of the usual wind and water damage associated with tropical storms and hurricanes. However, it appears that TS Debby is having an effect on Florida's sinkholes as well. A Tampa Bay Times article cites numerous sinkhkoles that have opened up after the torrential rains of the tropical storm.
While Debby's eye has remained miles offshore for a long period of time, the main area of precipitation for the storm has stayed over the state of Florida. This slow moving storm has dumped inches of rain on the state. Many Florida counties were in a drought prior to the storm, and it remains to be seen exactly how much these rains affect that status.
